Gartner’s “Top Four Trends Are Shaping the Future of Public Cloud” report estimates that global spending on cloud services will reach $482 billion in 2022. This is almost double from pre-pandemic spending; in 2019 spending on cloud services was only $257.5 billion. Earlier this year, Bitcoin’s value raised to $60,000. Although mining bitcoin can be highly profitable, powering the operations comes at a high cost. The Digiconomist’s Bitcoin Energy Consumption Index estimated that one Bitcoin transaction takes 1,544 kWh to complete, or the equivalent of approximately 53 days of power for the average US household. In 2020, KPMG, the multinational accounting firm, released results from its annual Global CEO Outlook report. At first, the firm surveyed 1,300 CEOs. Yet after the lockdown, KPMG surveyed 315 additional CEOs to collect more data. The report revealed that 80% of business leaders had accelerated their digital expansion plans during the lockdown as they adjusted to the remote workforce and increased e-commerce spending. In 2014, the Basel Action Network (BAN) started the e-Trash Transparency Project. As part of the initiative, they place GPS trackers in decommissioned IT hardware to track the recycling process. BAN recently discovered the Dell and Goodwill partnership, known as Dell Reconnect, exported e-waste overseas. Four monitors traveled from a Washington D.C. Goodwill store to Guatemala. Microsoft’s Windows 7 Reaches its End of Life As of January 14th, Microsoft is officially no longer supporting Windows 7 – without an additional fee. This means devices with this operating system (OS) will not receive patches or updates. Without these software updates, the outdated system will be vulnerable to hackers and other cyberattacks.
