New York State Electronics Recycling & E-Waste Laws
Have an old TV or computer that you want to get rid of? If you live in the state of New York, then you might want to think twice before dropping it at the curb for the trashman to pick up because thanks to the state’s latest e-waste legislation, you could find yourself facing a $100 fine.
This latest action in the state’s ongoing efforts to help reduce the irresponsible disposal of electronics actually went into effect on January 1, 2015, but New York City had been leading the way in e-waste recycling far longer than that. In fact, over the last 20 months alone, New York City has recycled more than 863,000 pounds of e-waste and currently, more than 1 million New Yorkers now live in buildings that offer electronics recycling services.
What Does the New York State Disposal Ban Include?
According to the NYS Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act, individuals and businesses will no longer be able to have the following items picked up by sanitation workers:
What Options are Available to Consumers for New York City Electronics Recycling?
If you have some electronic devices that you want to get rid of, there are plenty of options available to both consumers and businesses. For starters, in New York, many manufacturers offer free take-back programs for the equipment they produce. A list of manufacturers registered with the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation can be found here. If your brand’s manufacturer isn’t included on this this, then visit the company’s website for more information on how and where to recycle their products.
There are also hundreds of drop-off locations in New York City and around the state where you can simply drop off your unwanted electronics. These locations include your local Goodwill (no CRTs), Salvation Army, Best Buy, and Staples (no TVs). You can also take your equipment to the Gowanus E-Waste Warehouse if you live in the vicinity.
If you live in a New York City apartment dwelling with ten or more units, you can request the building’s management to sign up for free e-waste recycling provided by e-cycleNYC.
Another option is to attend one of the city’s e-waste recycling events, like the SAFE Disposal Event.
