The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation’s Electronic Equipment Reuse and Recycling Act (EERRA) goes into effect January of 2012. This legislature makes New York one of the 26 states in the country that have passed similar laws in an attempt to prevent toxic materials from electronic waste from entering the air and water.
The electronic equipment recycling mandate states that all businesses in New York will have to have their e-waste recycled by a certified electronic recycling facility. Examples of e-waste include old or obsolete computers, hard drives, monitors and other electronic devices. Failure to comply with the new law could result in costly fines or penalties.
The NYS Electronic Equipment Recycling and Reuse Act also requires manufacturers of electronic equipment to provide free recycling of e-waste to consumers within the state. Those eligible for free e-waste recycling include:
According to the Environmental Protection Agency, e-waste accounts for just 1% of the waste found in the nation’s landfills, but that amount accounts for 70% of the toxins and hazardous materials found there. Nearly all electronic equipment contains hazardous materials like mercury and lead and as they break down in landfills, these toxins work their way into the waterways and atmosphere where they can contaminate the environment, affecting the air we breathe and the water we drink. In a country where more than 133,000 computers are discarded every single day, proper e-waste recycling is a must.
