Whether a company regularly upgrades IT equipment to keep pace with cutting edge technologies, is migrating to the cloud, or simply finds itself with end-of-life hardware it no longer needs, all face the same dilemma: what to do with the no longer needed legacy equipment. Companies faced with this predicament soon realize the problem of excess technology is much more complex than what they face when simply updating their office furniture. Here are three reasons why e-waste may be your next big problem: 1)       Improperly Recycled e-Waste Can Negatively Impact […]

In 2000, China banned illegal e-waste imports; but the country was still receiving tons of e-waste a year. The Chinese city, Guiyu, was known as the e-waste capital because it was the center of China’s e-waste industry. According to the UN, 70% of all e-waste was being exported to China. Last year, China blocked all imports of 24 types of foreign trash. This action left a void in the e-waste industry. This year, so far e-waste in Thailand has increased to 37,000 tons. This number does not include the illegal […]

In 2016, the Basel Action Network (BAN) conducted the e-Trash Transparency Project. BAN also published a report, “Disconnect: Goodwill and Dell, Exporting the Public’s e-Waste to Developing Countries” that explained the entire tracking process. The project tracked equipment given to Goodwill. The results were surprising. Some of the donated computers were exported to East Asia. At the time Dell partnered with Goodwill for their Reconnect Program. The Reconnect Program promises that equipment will be refurbished or recycled responsibly. At the same time, they are mandating that their contracted e-waste recyclers shred used Apple products. Shredding devices ensure their products are not resold or reused. Apple Shreds Used Devices Why wouldn’t Apple want recyclers to repair old equipment? The answer could be simple — they want customers to purchase more at the regular price point. Quality Assurance regulations […]

BAN (Basel Action Network) is petitioning President Obama to change the U.S. e-Waste policies. BAN Startling e-Waste Discovery BAN started the e-Trash Transparency Project to collect data on the e-Waste recycling process. Brexit May Deeply Affect the Environment The United Kingdom exiting from the European Union has created a huge snowball effect. Brexit has lead to uncertainty for many businesses in the UK and abroad. Not only does exit affect the economy but the environment as well. As a member of the EU, Britain was expected to follow the Circular Economy Package (CEP). The policy consisted of six bills on waste, packaging, landfill, end of life vehicles, batteries, and accumulators, and waste electronic equipment. Overall the CEP EU was created to encourage […]

What Are the Impacts of Irresponsible E-Waste Disposal? Every time you toss an old cell phone, laptop, iPod, or other electronic device into the trash, do you know where it ultimately ends up? These items end up in our landfills where the toxic metals and chemicals contained within them eventually leach into the soil as they degrade. While the toxic chemicals of just one cell phone might not seem like a lot, consider the environmental impact when more than 100 million cell phones are dumped, such as what happens in […]
