The United Nations designated the first Monday of October as World Habitat Day to reflect on the state of our towns and cities, and on the basic right of all to adequate shelter. The day is also intended to remind the world that we each have a responsibility to shape the future of our world. This year, the UN chose the theme of frontier technologies as an innovative tool to transform waste into wealth. One way your organization can support this initiative is by creating a retirement plan for your […]

Now that emerging technologies are surfacing faster and in greater numbers, innovative IT strategies are shifting business paradigms and data security is a growing concern, the topic of e-waste is becoming an increasingly prevalent conversation in the world of tech. Electronic waste, or e-waste, encompasses the massive amounts of discarded end-of-life electrical assets or electronic equipment that businesses and individuals have come to produce. This can include computers, monitors, printers, scanners, phones, DVD players and more. However, although most are aware of e-waste, the amount of disposed assets currently being generated […]

Last week, Arrow Electronics announced it would shut down its ITAD sector. By August 5th the company plans to stop receiving equipment at their facilities. The news came as a surprise to both their clients and staff. In response to the sudden closure, our team released a special podcast with Liquid Technology’s Managing Partner, Richard Greene. Steve Sidwell, Liquid Technology’s SVP of Technology & Compliance, hosted the episode. During the interview, Greene addressed some of the Arrow’s claims about the industry, explained how to find a new ITAD vendor and […]

In May, our team went to Ashburn, VA to decommission a 15,000 sqft data center. The process took over four days. We had eight technicians on-site. They shredded 13,802 hard drives. Liquid Technology utilizes NIST Special Publication 800-88 standards to ensure data is properly destroyed. Our team pulled 904 servers; then they removed 104 racks. The last step was removing and recycling 9,211 pounds of cables. Our team left the data center broom clean. You can watch the entire process in the time-lapse video below. Companies choose to partner with […]

According to the World Economic Forum’s “A New Circular Vision for Electronics: Time for a Global Reboot” report, only 20% of e-waste is recycled properly. Improperly recycled e-waste can have a negative effect on the environment. In this infographic, we illustrate the negative impact of e-waste.

Moore’s Law derived from Gordon Moore, the co-founder of Intel. Moore predicted that about every two years chip improvements would double a processors performance. Over time the theory has become an innovation standard for computer manufacturers. Yet now the rate of chip innovation is slowing down. “Moore’s Law used to grow at 10x every five years, 100x every 10 years,” said Jensen Huang, CEO and Co-founder of Nvidia, during a Q&A panel at CES 2019. “Right now, Moore’s Law is growing a few percent every year” Huang explained. Although Huang […]

Technology, and the innovation behind it, moves quickly. It appears that every time we turn around there is a new product, a new system, a new must-have that will revolutionize the way we interact with the world around us and the people in it. The rapid pace at which tech moves makes for exciting times indeed, but there is a little known danger from the quick product turnarounds and constant innovation we have come to expect. In a mounting fight against the toxic e-waste stemming from our increasing number of […]

This past month at the DISASSEMBLY: BROOKLYN art show in New York City, Liquid Technology Manager, Michael Cappuccilli joined Brooklyn artist, Wiena Lin, and representatives from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency, MIT Senseable City Lab, and Basel Action Network to explore the true cost of affordable consumer electronics. The panel, “Design and the E-Waste Crisis,” took place on August 16, 2018 to educate attendees regarding the negative impact that obsolete electronics have on the environment. DISASSEMBLY: BROOKLYN is a site-specific, participatory installation that examines consumer electronics through the lens of […]

Why do R2 and e-Stewards matter? Well, both are electronic waste standards. These regulations were created to stop illegal and harmful e-waste practices. Before these initiatives, there was little policing around organizations exporting e-waste to countries like China, and Ghana. Often in these countries e-waste is mishandled leading to exposure to toxins and hazardous materials. In 2008, the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) organized a multi-stakeholder process to create a voluntary, market-based mechanism for ensuring best practices in electronics recycling. The operation led to the creation of the R2 […]
