How to Make your Tech Department More Sustainable In 2020

Sustainability in tech

Sustainability is becoming a growing concern for many organizations. Yet many companies are unaware of how much technology impacts the environment. Below are a few stats that could help make your organization more sustainable in 2020.

Unnecessary Emails have a Greater Impact

A new study commissioned by OVO states that in the UK alone, over 64 million unnecessary emails are sent daily. If each UK adult sent one fewer email that would save more than 16,433 tonnes (over 36 million pounds) of carbon a year. This is just a small percentage of the data that is being sent daily. Now imagine cloud services and the amount of electricity it takes to run those data centers. In 2017, Forbes reported that U.S. data centers used more than 90 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity a year. This required roughly 34 giant (500-megawatt) coal-powered plants. It is estimated that this amount will double every four years.

Two Times more E-waste

In 2017, the United Nations University released the results from e-waste tracking efforts in their Global E-waste Monitor 2017 report. They discovered that globally, we created 49.2 million tons of e-waste. The report also identified that e-waste had doubled in nine years. They predicted that by 2021, the annual total of e-waste would surpass 57 million tons. Only 20% is properly recycled.

Another way an organization can ensure their IT department is being sustainable is by working with a certified ITAD service provider. Partnering with a certified ITAD partner will guarantee your IT is recycled safely and ethically. That means your e-waste will not be dumped in landfills. Liquid Technology is eStewards and R2 certified. We can help you recycle your e-waste sustainably. Call us at 1-800-797-5478 or email us to learn more about our services.
